A comprehensive molecular approach to the detection of drug-type versus fiber-type hemp varieties

The availability of molecular markers able to distinguish drug-type from fiber-type Cannabis sativa cultivars would allow fast and cheap analysis any plant specimen, including seeds leaves. Several approaches this issue have been described, mainly using polymorphisms in the genes coding for tetrahydrocannabinol acid synthase or cannabidiolic synthase. Some studies reported sequencing these small groups hemp varieties belonging both chemotypes, showing occurrence specific DNA signatures. However, effectiveness corresponding primers discriminate among chemotypes has validated on a limited number cultivars, not tested at all. Here we report thorough silico available gene sequences synthases, existence hypervariable regions 3’ 5’ ends. This notwithstanding, some possible signatures were identified, 12 putatively primer pairs designed 16 11 varieties. In most cases inconsistent results obtained, further strengthening high genetic variability germplasm, yet highly informative identified. Potentiality perspectives approach are discussed.
